"Astana Ballet" will show a previously banned play on a biblical story

The premiere of performance will be presented at “Astana Ballet” Theater on February 16 and 17

ASTANA, Feb 8 - Sputnik. "Astana Ballet" Theater is preparing for the premiere of one-act ballet "Salome" based on play of famous English classic Oscar Wilde.

"Salome" is a one-act play written by Oscar Wilde in the French language in 1891, and later translated into English and published in London in 1894. The tragedy is based on a story of Salome, a New Testament character. The interpretation of the biblical plot caused a scandal in England. The play was banned for a long time, both in Great Britain and in Russia, because it was forbidden to bring biblical characters onto stage.

It is noted that, as an expert in human souls, Oscar Wilde turned the ancient biblical legend about King Herod’s stepdaughter Salome into the original spectacular drama of temptation and human nature.

"The most important thing for me was to try to immerse myself in the element of human feelings and desires. I would like to create an aesthetic dance, but born primarily from an inner impulse. Therefore, in addition to unification of music, movements and emotions, it was necessary to reach a full understanding with the artists, that happened to my joy," the chief choreographer of the theater Mukaram Avakhri said.

According to her, the idea of the performance was conceived for a long time and it was planned that the premiere would replenish and diversify the repertoire of the theater, and the artists would show themselves in a slightly different format. As it was reported at the press conference, today the play is at the stage of birth, rehearsals are taking place, the "strokes" are being practiced, but music is the most important.

"It will literally seize the spectator and fill with energy. I want to say that the artists are very keen. I see that the idea of the performance captures them, so it will turn out to be voluminous and interesting. It's interesting to watch the artists during rehearsals. I give a task, but want the artists feel free in this performance. I do not focus on choreography, but more on expression and splash of emotions," the chief choreographer added.

As for protagonist of Salome, two completely different, as noted by the directors, ballerinas were entrusted to represent this complex image on the stage. The decision was taken due to the stage possibilities of the artistes, who fit in the image, but completely different.

“For example, Darina Kairasheva is touching on stage, a young ballerina, but at the same time as a clot of energy that does not leave her. Aizhan Mukatova is good in her own way. She feels rock. She is like a fury that carries tragedy and horror. I think that her body composition is important in this, she worked in Eifman’s company for a long time, and has her own choreographic language, leaving its "imprint". And here we have such a mix,” Mukaram Avakhri explained.

As the leading soloist of the theater Farkhad Buriyev, who plays the role of John the Baptist, told the press conference, the audience should not accept this ballet as a story that everyone knows.

"Oscar Wilde changed it, adding more love story. Mukaram Avakhri, in her turn, adds "colors." That is, this "Salome" is not in the usual notion of that history, but something new... We also select our images. It will have its own beauty, so every spectator, perhaps, will find himself in each of the heroes, answering personal questions," the theater's soloist added.

According to him, he, like his colleagues, performs Salome for the first time, but it is not complicated in terms of physical requirements, but requires more emotional feedback from everyone who will perform the performance on stage.

"The viewer may not understand various steps and movements, but at the same time everyone feels each other emotionally. I think it will go down in the list of my favorites, because the performance is a play... As for the image, I'm still analyzing the hero and have not come to final conclusion, but I think the hardest thing is to outplay the colleagues who have brighter images," Farkhad Buriyev said.

According to the plot, Salome falls in love with the prophet, and, overcome by passion, craves for his kiss. Remaining indifferent to young virgin’s impulse, the saint arouses an irresistible desire to know the feeling of love at any cost in her heart. As a result, the Jewish princess deceives his stepfather, having performed the dance of seven veils, and demands the prophet John’s head in reward. But not to indulge in vengeance and amuse the wounded pride, but in order to merge into a kiss with the desired lips, even if the price of this kiss is death of the loved one.

"I will not come to such a real decision as it was done in operas and dramatic plays, using a lot of blood and a dummy head. I leave it, so I think let it be a secret," Mukaram Avakhri stressed.

In general, as noted during the press conference, all actors of the troupe are involved in the production - soloists and corps de ballet. The performance itself, as assured in the theater, is designed so that effect of presence "here and now" allows the public to experience bright and unforgettable emotions. The premiere will be presented at “Astana Ballet” Theater on February 16 and 17.
