The Astana Ballet Theatre concludes its XIII theatrical season with the premiere of the ballet «Altyn Gul»

On 26 and 27 June, the Astana Ballet Theatre brought the XIII theatrical season to a close by presenting the long-awaited premiere of the national ballet «Altyn Gul» to the audience. Both premieres were fully booked, and the events became a celebration of art, attracting ballet connoisseurs, cultural figures and numerous guests of the theatre.

The narrative is founded upon a singular historical artefact – a gold plate dating back to the III-II centuries BC, bearing the image of a tulip, unearthed in the Tenlik mounds. Inspired by this symbol, the authors created a philosophical story about the artisan jeweller Zerger, who, captivated by the aesthetic allure of the steppe tulip, chose to immortalise its image in his artistic oeuvre.

The production employs the language of classical ballet, neoclassical and modern dance to narrate a tale of spiritual search, inspiration and generational continuity. This motif, depicting the steppe tulip, serves as a potent symbol of aesthetic allure, vitality, rejuvenation, and an unbreakable bond with one’s homeland. The audience responded positively to the new production, appreciating its artistic solutions, expressive choreography, musical drama and vivid stage images.

Mukaram Avakhri, the theatre’s chief choreographer and Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan, shared her thoughts following the premiere: «These were very exciting days for our entire team. We were genuinely concerned because the performance required significant dedication from all involved. «Altyn Gul» is a unique production that was created out of a deep love for our culture, history and nature».

The artistic director of the theatre, Nurlan Kanetov, observed that the premiere constituted a fitting conclusion to the theatre season: «The culmination of the XIII theatre season with the premiere of «Altyn Gul» was a significant event for our theatre. This performance reflects our commitment to safeguarding the national cultural heritage by showcasing it through the medium of modern ballet art. The resounding applause from the audience served as a testament to the exceptional efforts of the entire creative team. I would like to express my gratitude to the performers, the production team, the theatre staff and, naturally, our audience for their trust and love of art».

Renat Gaissin, composer and Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan, shared: «This is far from my first work for the Astana Ballet Theatre, but each production is special to me in its own way. It is truly gratifying to observe the manner in which music is brought to life on stage, thanks to the versatility of ballet dancers, their profound emotional impact and their exceptional skill. It is a pleasure to work with Mukaram Avakhri. She is a talented choreographer with excellent artistic taste. She knows how to inspire the entire creative team and bring music to life on stage».

The author of the libretto was Bakhyt Kairbekov, an Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan, and the costumes were designed by Aigerim Altybassarova.

The premiere of «Altyn Gul» not only marked the highlight of the XIII theatrical season but also confirmed that Kazakhstan’s rich cultural heritage can be brought to life on stage in a way that remains close to and understandable for the spectator.

The event was held with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
